Desk setups
Build a cleaner desk setup in an afternoon
Five small changes — from screen height to cable routing — that make a desk calmer, more comfortable and easier to work at.
A cleaner desk isn't about owning less — it's about giving everything a place. These changes take an afternoon and make a noticeable difference to how your workday feels.
1. Raise your screen
The top of your screen should sit at or slightly below eye level. For laptops, a stand gets you most of the way there; pair it with an external keyboard and mouse so your arms stay relaxed.
2. Reduce to one cable
A USB-C monitor or hub can carry power, video and accessories over a single connection. Plug your peripherals in once, then connect your laptop with one cable when you sit down.
3. Light the desk, not the screen
Glare causes more eye fatigue than many people realise. A monitor light bar or a lamp positioned to the side lights your work surface without reflecting on the screen.
4. Keep the surface mostly empty
- Keep only daily-use items within reach
- Use a desk mat to define your working area
- Give chargers a single home with a charging station
- Add one personal object — a plant, a print — and stop there
5. Reset at the end of the day
Two minutes to put things back makes tomorrow start calmly. It's the habit that keeps every other improvement working.
